When Should You Wear Your Retainer?
The next step is easy. You’ll want to wear your retainer all the time at first, unless the orthodontist tells you otherwise. It is totally normal to find it a little tricky to speak clearly for the first day or two. We recommend practicing by reading or singing out loud, it’s a great way to get used to it faster. From there, we’ll move into a routine that better fits your lifestyle. Don't forget to bring it with you to your regular orthodontic appointments so we can make sure the fit is still perfect.
How Do You Keep Your Retainer Safe?
Life happens, and retainers can become lost or broken over time. But because retainers are personalized and can be expensive to replace, it’s best to keep them protected. When it’s not in your mouth, it should always be in its case. Most retainers are lost in school lunchrooms or restaurants when they’re wrapped in a napkin by mistake. Also, keep them away from pets, dogs especially love to chew on them! If you do happen to misplace or break yours, give us a call right away.
What Is The Best Way To Clean Your Retainer?
Keeping your retainer fresh is a simple part of life after treatment. Just use your toothbrush and toothpaste with warm, not hot, water once a day. This removes plaque and keeps it smelling clean. Avoid hot water, hot car dashboards, or the washing machine, as high heat can warp the shape of the plastic.

We are so pleased by our experience at Greater Madison Orthodontics! Dr. Doshi leads a fantastic team that is always laughing and having fun while they work. They really put our teen at ease as she went through the process of having her braces. Today, we finished up, and the result was phenomenal. Dr Doshi and her team have been excellent. Very communicative, kind and gentle with my daughter’s needs. We transferred here from another ortho office that was not good with explanations or bedside manner, and now grateful that we made the switch even though the Stoughton office is a bit of a drive from Madison.
